Everyone who visits SummerHouse Needleworks comes back with rave reviews! While not in Lancaster County, it is still in the Lancaster vicinity, and it is such a popular shop that it is definitely worth the drive!
Steve Carr, the new proprietor, writes, "that we have over 5000 bolts of fabric, as well as needlepoint canvases and specialty threads, all packed into an inn built in 1862 out in the middle of nowhere. We also specialize in blocks of the month by mail and have up to 27 different series going at any given moment in time."
The one constant I hear from everyone who visits SummerHouse is that their selection of fabric, and sense of color is among the best anywhere!
Directions from Steve:
Take Route 222 North to Route 422 East. Business Route 422 will merge with highway 422. Move to the left. At Shelbourne Rd. (McDonald's and Wendy's occupy opposite corners), make a left. Follow this delightfully twisty road until you reach the next traffic light. You will need to cross through the intersection -- the road across from you will bear towards the right. This is Oley Turnpike Rd. Follow Oley Turnpike Rd. until it crosses Route 662 just past the Oley Dairy. We're 1/2 mi. past the intersection on the left.
Go to 422 West and follow until you reach Route 662 North (at Douglasville). Turn right onto Route 662 North. Once you reach Yellow House, continue for about two miles. Oley Turnpike Rd. will be almost unmarked, but there will be a sign for the Oley Dairy on your left and a big old white farmhouse on the corner. Remember -- you'll be out in the middle of the fields, so be careful and don't pass it by. Make a right on Oley Turnpike Rd. and the shop is 1/2 mi. on the left. If you pass the Oley Mennonite Church, you just passed our road!
Take Route 222 South. Make a left at the Moselem Springs Inn onto Route 662 South. Follow Route 662 as it turns through Fleetwood and follow it around the village of Oley. Route 662 will turn to the right just near the outskirts of town. About two miles down the road you will see the Oley Mennonite Church. Slow down, because at the big white farmhouse just past the church, you will make a left. There will be a directional sign pointing towards Griesemersville. We are 1/2 mi. down the road on the left.
From New Jersey:
Northern New Jersey: Take I-78 west into Pennsylvania. Exit at the Route 222 exit at Allentown and follow the directions from Allentown above.
Southern New Jersey: Take the PA Turnpike to Exit 22 at Morgantown. Follow signs to I-76 north to Reading. At the end, follow Route 422 east. Follow the directions from Lancaster after Route 422 and Business Route 422 merge.
Steve says, "If in doubt, call. We appreciate your persistance in finding us. We love our country location and hope you agree it's worth the trip!"
