From vision to reality, everything about the quilt process engages me: the initial flash of inspiration, the fabric choices, the design decisions, and especially the quilting. I love the process.
Most often, I make quilts in response to challenges or commissions where I have to conform to a theme, a set of rules, a client’s desires. When my schedule allows, I work with ideas and techniques that make my heart sing. I love structure – trees, buildings, standing stones. I incorporate words wherever I can and I revel in their graphic nature.
If I’m not in my studio, you’ll probably find me teaching, lecturing, or facilitating workshops.
Too Much Soul to Control
This commission quilt is a tribute to a client’s late husband.
In it, I incorporated some of his most beloved clothing and belongings. The movie theme was a nod to their shared love of films and the film industry.
To create the sprocket holes for the edges of the film, I used Shiva Paintstiks and a tape stencil. There is a lot of QuiltWriting in this quilt as well as freemotion machine quilting.
This quilt has been chosen to hang in the 2007 IQA Judged Show in Houston.
This quilt was my initial response to the Mason Dixon Quilt Professionals' Network challenge: To Color or Not to Color. I wanted to explore silver and gold as the absence and presence of color. I also wanted to play with all those luscious silks and quilter's lamé I'd been collecting.
The crowns are fused on organza which is layered on black to give a nice, neutral gray background. The checkerboard borders are pieced and set off from the center by tiny piping. All beads are attached by hand with needle and thread, including the legions of Swarovski crystals around the outside of the binding.
MonarchChromatic traveled to the MidAtlantic Quilt Festival, where it won a blue ribbon for handwork.
This quilt is in my private collection, but it travels to workshops where I teach beading.
