Land of the Free and Home of the Fearful

We fear old age, immigrants, and terrorists. We are stressed about lawsuits, the economy, and our environment. We don't even trust our own government.

I feel that we here in the United States are a culture wracked with an undercurrent of fear, and that the over-abundance of information may actually cause some of the fear.

I have taken one of the common symbols of the U.S.— the colors red, white and blue and combined them with snippets from newspapers and magazines to create another symbol of the U.S.—the shape of the lower 48 states. I printed the collage on fabric and echo quilted around the word fear into the collage. The backing fabric is printed with yet another symbol of our culture—the greenback
